Why Is My Car Overheating? Common Causes

An overheating engine needs attention because excessive temperature can lead to serious engine damage. The cause, however, is not always the thermostat or radiator. The cooling system works as a group of components, so the symptoms should be diagnosed before parts are replaced.

Common Causes of Engine Overheating

Low coolant, external coolant leaks, a thermostat that is not opening correctly, an inoperative radiator fan, restricted coolant flow, a weak or damaged water pump, radiator problems, or trapped air in the cooling system can all contribute to overheating. Internal engine problems can also cause excessive cooling-system pressure or loss of coolant.

Low Coolant and Coolant Leaks

If the cooling system does not contain enough coolant, it may not be able to absorb and transfer engine heat properly. Coolant can escape from hoses, the radiator, water pump, reservoir, fittings, gaskets, or other cooling-system components. Finding the source of the loss is more useful than repeatedly topping off the system.

Thermostat Problems

The thermostat controls coolant flow as the engine warms. A thermostat that remains closed or does not open sufficiently can restrict circulation and contribute to overheating. A thermostat that is stuck open more commonly causes slow warm-up or an engine that runs cooler than intended. Temperature symptoms alone do not prove that the thermostat is defective.

Radiator Fan Problems

Electric cooling fans are especially important when the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly because there is less natural airflow through the radiator. A fan problem can involve the fan motor, fuse, relay, wiring, temperature input, control module, or another part of the control circuit. An overheating complaint at idle that improves while driving can justify checking fan operation, but it is not proof of a failed fan.

Radiator and Water-Pump Problems

A restricted or damaged radiator can reduce the system's ability to release heat. A water-pump problem can reduce coolant circulation. Diagnosis should consider coolant flow, temperature differences, leaks, belt drive where applicable, and other cooling-system conditions rather than replacing either component based on the temperature gauge alone.

What to Do if the Temperature Gauge Is Climbing

If the engine temperature is rising into an unsafe range or a temperature warning appears, continuing to drive can increase the risk of engine damage. Safely stop the vehicle when possible and allow the engine to cool. Do not remove a radiator cap or pressurized coolant cap while the system is hot, because hot coolant and steam can escape under pressure.
